<span style="font-family: "arial";">When perceiving any physical form, our mind responds
to the character of the specific form. Everything
that we see has a form or is given form by our perception. Each form that we perceive evokes or is
capable of evoking some kind of response in us.
In other words everything has a form and all form has some form of
content or spirit. Artists understand
this and manipulate form in order to express certain and not readily apparent contents. Form is what we see and content is what we
interpret as the meaning of what we see.
The relationships between form and content are dynamic. As form changes so
does content. This exhibition will feature selected paintings
and drawings from my collection from different periods and stages of my work and
will illustrate what I mean by this relationship of form and content.

This artwork is one of my last pieces inspired by the God Particle theory that was discovered July 2012. This art work revealed to me the excitement of life of discovering the beauty of the Universe and therefore of our every day life. This piece is composed by 36 single panels on the wood, Four Elements: Ea...rth, Water, Air, Fire ,each one measures 2ft. x 2ft. a total of 36.ft X 6 ft. h. This piece can also be separated in four different sections each of 6ft x 6ft

God Particle: Scientists from the atom smasher in Switzerland say to have discovered a subatomic particle, named “God particle” because it is believe to have originated during the Big Bang and helped shape the subatomic particles that make up all matter in the universe,

However the artist should have a message to convey, a message revealed to him by his inner voice that also accounts for the beauty of his work. Only that is beautiful.

After Caravaggio, by Eyob Mergia, © 2012

I received a phone call several weeks ago with the news that one my pieces, which had been displayed in a church, had been vandalized. Someone had slashed it with a knife, and the damage was irreparable. I was surprised and saddened to hear that someone would do that. Anyone would feel the same upon hearing that a piece of his or her work had been destroyed in that way. An artist works to inspire his audience, and to move them to create and work in their own way. Doesn't every artist hope and expect that his or her artwork will inspire people to create and work in a positive way, and not to destroy?

One of the reasons I did this painting in the first place was that several years ago I studied the use of dark tones in painting. It was very important to me to paint darker figures in darker compositions, and to learn and develop the techniques used by the Renaissance painters. I often include elements of three excellent painters: Caravaggio, Henry Tanner, and Peter Paul Rubens. Even as a child I loved the works of those painters. In most of their work they use radical naturalist and realist styles which combine a close physical observation with dynamic, even theatrical, approach to chiaroscuro, which is the art term for the dramatic use of light and shadow. A close study of realistic painting is a very good foundation for abstract painting.

So in the end, I have repainted the painting that was destroyed. The church wanted to have me paint it again, and I was happy to oblige.

My modern arts will be exhibited to the Vegas art community for the first time. Aster Aweke and I will open the start of artistically renovated Cazino Lounge and Gallery that constitutes a lounge, an art gallery, a nightclub and a restaurant.

For the last few months I have been working on a project that has taken me to Chicago and Washington, DC, as well keeping me busy in Las Vegas. I'm in the process of finishing the Cazino Lounge and Gallery. This project is more like an installation than a traditional painting--I have designed and painted this space to create a home for my paintings. It's been an exciting idea to explore, learn and create. More than working on a single painting, working on a project like this gives me an entirely new perspective on art in general.

The aesthetics of Cazino are artistically designed from inspirations of space science, Yin Yang symbol forms conjoining Ethiopian monumental art. The art essence intersects the form and color of the three. I boldly projected a new kind of art perspective in my new works. The art design at Cazino entertains 3-dimensional space. It also amuses art concepts of music and spirituality. Cazino created a new type of leisure place where people enjoy services that connect the culinary services with music and contemporary art gallery. Connecting Ethiopian music great Aster Aweke and my art works, Cazino will open the new model of lounge and gallery.

The Inner Voice: Upcoming solo exhibition by artist Eyob Mergia will be displayed on the 22nd of January.

Two Simultaneous Gallery Openings on January 20th, 6pm to January 24th
Theater 7 and Graficandus Art Studio
1406 South 3rd Street
Las Vegas, NV 89104

Happy New Year!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16802094201960307756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8851061180361537722.post-59006803840931299572011-09-10T14:35:00.000-07:002013-09-06T23:59:04.457-07:00Genesis

This large charcoal drawing (29 by 8.5 ft) was originally conceived as part of my research and preparation for a mosaic and tile project on spiritual art, but became one of my most important pieces. The ideas have been stirring in my head for some time, and finally I've started painting. I'm expressing the color, the night life, the mood of the city, the essence of the beauty. The reflections especially call out for oil paint, and watercolors, to be expressed graphically. There is very wide scope for the imagination.

My goal is to take these realities into the abstract form, carrying the audience with me into a new way of seeing the things around them. In visiting art galleries around Las Vegas, I have seen a lot of art (and some exceptional sculpture) and I'm looking forward to contributing my own abstract voice to the artistic expression of the city. All abstract art comes from the realistic world, and the degree of abstraction and the strength of expression comes from what is inside.

At the same time, we don't want to abstract so far that we lose touch with the real, because that is the only connection we have with the audience. The artist is responsible to carry the people along with him as he creates his experimental art, so they can see where he's going. It's like you're bringing them aboard your boat and sailing with them to your world. People need to be able to see themselves in your work. Realistic painting may represent one person's perspective, but abstract art has the capacity to communicate universally.

I'm going to be working with some galleries in California and Las Vegas throughout this year. I'm developing a project about the Boulevard into a large exhibit for later this year. Keep watching the blog for more updates on this project.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16802094201960307756noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8851061180361537722.post-87412944697629455102011-06-18T11:08:00.000-07:002013-09-06T23:59:04.426-07:00Abstraction in Practice, articleIn the Spring 2011 issue of Art of the Hills, John A. Day wrote a very insightful article entitled, Abstraction in Practice.

In this article, he offers the reader a brief discussion of the nature of abstract art, recognizing that, “abstract art exists on a continuum running from realistic through non-representational measured by degrees, and it is those degrees that merit discussion in issues of style, technique, and intent.”

He then follows the thread of those degrees through the art of various South Dakota artists. The section about my art featured The Cello Dream. That time has seen many changes in my art as I have learned and developed. One of the things I have learned during my time in Sioux Falls is how to focus my creativity and cultivate my inspiration. Sometimes it’s difficult to be inspired when a person sees the same things every day. We have to learn how to find inspiration in other places—books, and other works of art, music, and learning from many different aspects of life.

I’m very happy with the pieces of art that I have contributed to the community of Sioux Falls. These pieces are some that I feel are my most valuable contributions of artistic awareness to the city:

The Seven Days of Creation

Genesis

Cello Dream

Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit

The Ark of the Covenant

Wisdom of Axum

These are some of the best pieces of my career, and I am glad to have them represent me here. I’m looking forward to continue to grow as an artist, pursuing some exciting opportunities in this field.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-544 alignleft" title="Morning Melody, oil on canvas, 36" X 48", 2010, $4800" src="http://eyobart.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/morning_melody_36x48.jpg?w=224" alt="Morning Melody, oil on canvas, 36" X 48", 2010, $4800" width="224" height="300" />I have accomplished what I needed to accomplish as an artist here, and I am grateful to this city for the time and opportunity to do that. I feel very supported and encouraged here. For that reason, I’m thankful for the experiences I’ve had over the past years.

To me being an artist is to have a mission. When I go to a new place, a different country or culture, my mission is find and express, to celebrate the beauty of that place, to dig into its history. Art is one of the languages that humans use to communicate. It is also a conceptual way to see. My art has allowed me to look at things in different dimensions, in forms and cubes and mathematical expressions.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-545 alignright" title="Mother and Child, oil on canvas, 31.5" X 39.5", 2007, $3800" src="http://eyobart.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/mother_and_child_312x395.jpg?w=240" alt="Mother and Child, oil on canvas, 31.5" X 39.5", 2007, $3800" width="240" height="300" />Artists have always taken their world and their experience and reinterpreted it, presented it back to their audience in a way that allows the audience to see that world in a new way, in a new light and a different form. Without art, the world is flat and boring—there is no beauty, no form, no inspiration.

Inspiration is an Idea that comes in a flash, and we grab that flash, take hold of that millisecond’s idea. We let the flash of that idea carry us along. It gives us wheels to run on, and it carries us and we carry it beyond and through other ideas and thoughts. They drive us from moment to moment, and help us explore the essence of life. We take the beauty out of the dust, and hold it up to the light.

Painting is not a pointless activity—it is a power that helps to refine the soul. Art is daily bread for the soul. However the artist should have a message to convey, a message, revealed to him by his inner voice, that is the source of the beauty in his work. Only that is beautiful.

Contact me if you are interested in any of the available paintings featured on this blog.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16802094201960307756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8851061180361537722.post-26615158001825768832010-11-12T18:30:00.000-08:002013-09-06T23:59:04.412-07:00The P3 Exhibition, Washington PavilionThe Spirit of the Dakotas

Several elements were in my mind as I worked on this piece. Hopefully, that would be an art that idealistically expresses the spirit of the Dakotas - an art that represents everyone.

Below is a beautiful poem Ron Robinson wrote as part of our collaboration to express the idea in both words and painting.

Dakota Moment
We are met at these crossroads of time,
ascended from the stairs of the double spiral
or descended from the galaxy of stars,
onto these plains where once great herds of bison
fled the arrows of He-Whose-Horse-Is-Crazy,
where mountains bear the likeness of our faces.

Who were they, so proud they carved their faces
into stone, as though in this to conquer time?
To seek permanence in this endless flux is crazy,
after all; stone crumbles, and words spiral
like leaves or birds in autumn winds, as bison
stir in fear of wolves that howl the stars.

This world is not ours, we who from the stars
were fashioned, whose sins are written in our faces,
whose existence is as fragile as the bison
we once brought near extinction, who in time
will be extinct, whose fortunes too will spiral
downward, and whose greed will drive us crazy.

What are we met to do in this crazy
world but seek to emulate our stars
whose talents bring them fame, who spiral
to obscurity, and whose faces
haunt us, so much like our own in time,
as though to warn us of our fate: like bison

to flourish for a little while, like bison
to be brought low? Is it truly crazy
to think there must be something else, that time
was given us to use, to regain the stars,
to reclaim our righteousness, to redeem our faces,
before we face the greater, final spiral?

But what can atone, what reverse the spiral?
Our fathers have transgressed against the bison,
against the earth, have set their very faces
one against the other, stolen Crazy
Horse, their heroes and their foes, their stars,
as mere attractions, have sold their own brief time.

Now give us kinder faces to climb the double spiral
up the steps of time, let flourish men and bison.
Though now it may seem crazy, we meet next in the stars.

–Ronald Robinson
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16802094201960307756noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8851061180361537722.post-72945162864344579092010-08-31T19:09:00.000-07:002013-09-06T23:59:04.358-07:00The Breath of God

The Completion of the Seven Days of Creation

Eight mosaic panels, glass and ceramic tile, 23 ft high and 7 ft wide each.

click the picture to enlarge

The Concept

Art helps to expand our minds’ capacity and lifts up our spirits. Art is a joy. Someone might be going through the day thinking about his or her daily activities, and suddenly he or she stops in front of a mural that depicts the beginning of the world. It breaks us out of time, it gives us a moment for ourselves that lifts us out of the stream of daily busyness.

I was reading in the book Art Forms a few days ago, and came upon this passage: “A technologically explosive society needs the humanizing rewards of artistic experience. The arts help meet our emotional and spiritual needs… Art helps us to see. How we see determines how we live.”When we read books, we are given a window into knowledge that we didn’t have. Works of art provide another means of learning, another window into knowledge. Children can look and learn without words.

Art conveys a spiritual knowledge without depending on words.

The artwork

The Seven Days of Creation is a different mural from most that I have seen. Many artists will simply submit an idea for a mural and from there, other people produce the mural itself. In this case, from the initial sketches, to the detailed drawings, to the finished paintings that were the design for the mural, I went through every step to make sure that the original concept was carried through to the final mural on the wall.

I hand-selected the colors for each section of the mural, and worked carefully with the ones who were building the mural throughout the process. A note about the technical aspect of creating a mural like this: There are three different ways to construct a mural: the Direct Method, the Indirect Method, and the Double Indirect Method. In the first, tiles are placed directly on the final surface. In the second, tiles are placed in a mirror image of the final design on an intermediate surface, and then transferred to the final surface.

The third method, which is the one used on the Seven Days of Creation, requires those building the mosaic to first construct the finished design on one surface, then transfer it in reverse to an intermediate surface, and then to transfer it to its final surface.

The artist

All of us are born for something. I think part of my purpose is to help people around me to create art on a higher level. An artist creates an artwork to communicate to his audience, and also to educate and influence younger artists. Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel and Picasso’s Guernica are both examples of an artist communicating his ideas, and also attempting to change the culture around them.

One of my goals in my art in general, and in the Seven Days of Creation in particular, is to create a higher standard for art and culture, to raise the level of art that is produced in Sioux Falls and in the world around us. As I promised, here is a garden for the four seasons, a gift to the world like it has been given to me. This is a legacy that will go on for generation to generation.

Special thanks to Syverson Tile for their patience and support, to Sicis for the wonderful collaboration, and to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church for both the opportunity to be part of this project and for their sponsorship.

An article in the Argus leader about the mosaic's design.
To see more details of the original design, visit my website.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16802094201960307756noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8851061180361537722.post-1858274105991787932010-08-04T13:28:00.000-07:002013-09-06T23:59:04.348-07:00Horizons magazine article

This is a painting that I did years ago for Avera McKennan about the Seasons, and the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. I hadn’t yet adjusted to the time difference, and I was wide awake. My eyes were staring out at the darkness of my room and there were sounds all around me. My mind and body were still in a fog from the travel, and it took a few moments to make sense of the sounds that woke me. There was a confusion of singing from the nearby church, and dogs barking, and the howl of hyenas, and the calling from the mosque, and there in the distance, the sound of a second Christian church, all layered and overlapping each other. This blend of sounds came to me as one indistinct whole, one complex sound.

[caption id="attachment_363" align="alignright" width="151" caption="The Spring, oil on canvas, 2009, 200 x 85"][/caption]

The beauty of the moment—with the sounds coming from the distance, the darkness, the danger of the distant hyenas’ howl and the safety and comfort of the familiar and nearby human sounds—the moment was so beautiful that I sat up and started sketching, trying to capture the sounds, the moments, the image of myself and the harmony of those nights sounds washing over me. Also, I was struck by the strangeness of the nocturnal hyenas’ call in what my body thought was the middle of the afternoon.

One of the challenges, and the joys of being an artist come in moments like that. How to capture that moment, that flash of experience, and to present it to your audience and to yourself? You can’t take a photograph of that experience—it wouldn’t show it all. Neither would an audio recording of those sounds, nor a video. None of those mechanical methods of recording the sight and sound of that experience can capture a sense of the person who was experiencing it. The idea, the experience comes, and the artist trains himself or herself to be able to let that idea flow through him and onto his paper as he sketches, and sketches and sketches. It’s as if I am a falling leaf, carrying in the cup of my leaf the sounds of those churches and the feel of the night air.

I’m in the process of developing these ideas into a series of paintings, and I’m looking forward to presenting them in the coming months. After traveling through Ethiopia and Germany and Vienna, Austria this summer, it’s good to be back home and back in the studio.

Upcoming Event:

I’m going to be participating in an open house in a few weeks at the Artisan House Galleries, on August 12th, from 5-8pm. I’ll send out more information as the time gets near, but mark your calendars and come on out.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16802094201960307756noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8851061180361537722.post-34064279753855000192010-03-24T20:37:00.000-07:002013-09-06T23:59:04.332-07:00A student workshop at Augustana CollegeA few weeks ago I had the opportunity to lead a workshop for students at Augustana College. The concept for the workshop came from one of my previous pieces, The Guitar Strings.

Two previous pieces, The Guitar Strings and the Wisdom of Axum, were both good preparation for this workshop as I worked to gain an understanding of the materials involved, the colors and the relationship between the pieces. Some materials have similar colors, and we can use these materials as one large brushstroke. We applied the materials as one would apply oil paint or watercolor to a painting. I believe this kind of exploration gives each person, each artist, the opportunity to take the work in his or her own direction.

Once one has started an oil painting, for example, it’s very difficult to use watercolor on the same canvas, because oil base doesn't allow the water to stick. So we need to use another medium to put watercolor on top of the oil paint. The question is how to use properly media that are not traditionally used side by side.

One goal of this workshop was to give the students some experience outside of the traditional, single media format. In this project, the students used a variety of very different materials to create one unified composition. "Composition," according to Wikipedia, "is the placement or arrangement of visual elements or ingredients in a work of art, as distinct from the subject of a work." The work created is reminiscent of Alberto Burri's art. (See image left.) Antoni Tápies used similar techniques in his work. (See right.) Both of these artists applied many years of experience and knowledge to the work in front of them. I'm always inspired by seeing their work, and their skill.

Given the short amount of time that we had to work, the students worked well and created some really nice pieces. I’m glad to have an opportunity to participate in the curriculum in this way. It’s very beneficial for the students to have a variety of experiences like this, and to be exposed to a variety of professional artists and teachers. For the benefit of the artistic community, and the community in general, we want students to graduate with rich, wide experiences. I would love to see students coming out of local art programs prepared to exhibit their work at a professional level, and ready for professional work in the arts.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16802094201960307756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8851061180361537722.post-68754769277922863712010-02-11T19:23:00.000-08:002013-09-06T23:59:04.310-07:00Axum
Axum

A Solo Exhibition of the artwork of Eyob Mergia

Gallery Opening Friday February 12th, 7-9pm
At Augustana’s Eide/Dalrymple Gallery

The works will be on display from February 12th until March 11th.

This show includes a collection of works done in the period from 2002 to 2010, based on conceptual elements of Axum.

Click the picture to enlarge.

Wisdom of Axum, 2010

AXUM: HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Axum was a city, the capital of a kingdom and the center of a civilization. From four hundred years before Christ until nearly six hundred years after the fall of Rome, the area that is now Ethiopia was ruled from the city of Axum, the capital and crown of the Kingdom of Axum. At the height of its power, Axum was a force to be reckoned with both on land and at sea and was one of the four kingdoms of the world. Both Roman and Byzantine accounts attest to Axum’s influence in trade and commerce. The legendary Queen of Sheba reigned in the region eight or nine centuries earlier; her historic journey to King Solomon’s court in 980 BC, with 700 camels loaded with gold, ivory and other gifts, is well documented in the Old Testament. Her bathing pool and substantial remains of her palace can still be found in Axum.

The Axum civilization was one of the first to adopt Christianity (in the early 4th century), but the obelisks pre-date the Christian period. Perceived as the cradle of Ethiopian civilization and once the gateway between Africa and Asia, Axum was a thriving trading centre when Jesus was preaching in Palestine. Ships from Egypt, India and other countries in the orient stopped off there to load up with gold, ivory, incense, spices, hides as well as live animals such as elephants and monkeys.

Part of its success in commerce was due to its unique location—on the Red Sea between the African continent and the Arabian Peninsula; it was well-positioned to take advantage of trade routes. At this crossroads between cultures and continents it drew elements from its South Arabian as well as North African neighbors. The Axumite civilization developed its own form of writing, called Ge’ez, which is still used to write several languages, including Amharic and Tigrinya, two of the languages spoken in modern-day Ethiopia. Another lasting and significant contribution of the Axumite period is its distinctive architecture, echoes of which can still be seen today.

AXUM: THE STELAE

One of the enduring architectural remnants of the Axumite period are the stone monuments known alternately as obelisks or stelae. They are thought to have been erected to mark burial sites, as monuments to the dead, but they have come to be the symbols of the Axumite civilization. These obelisks vary a great deal in size and are found throughout the region, but the largest and most well-known stele, the Obelisk of Axum, is nearly eighty feet tall.

AXUM: THE OBELISK of AXUM

In 1937, in the aftermath of Fascist Italy’s brief conquest of Ethiopia, one of the stelae now known as the Obelisk of Axum was carried in pieces to Rome by Mussolini in 1937, as spoils of war. For decades it was a source of contention between the two countries—various Ethiopian leaders called for its return, and various Italian leaders cited technical difficulties and high costs of transport as obstacles. Finally in April 2005 the Obelisk was returned, again in pieces, to the city of Axum - 68 years after it was looted by Italian fascists.

For more information, visit my website.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16802094201960307756noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8851061180361537722.post-60955312909704419082010-02-02T19:56:00.000-08:002013-09-06T23:59:04.283-07:00Axum: A Solo ExhibitionOn Friday, February 12th from 7 to 9pm there will be a reception at Augustana's Eide/Dalrymple Gallery to open up my solo show, Axum. This painting is eight feet tall by two and a half feet wide, and will be displayed at Avera McKennan’s new Cancer Institute.

As I thought about this painting, it reminded in some ways of the paintings of Marc Chagall , especially the way he treats some of the human figures. In this painting,The Birthday Gift, the viewer receives an unmistakable cue that this is more about dramatic movement than realistic portrayal. The people represented are not rooted in reality, planted on the floor, but floating unhinged and unanchored. The way they are depicted allows us to see them in the motion of the moment they are living.

In this painting, my cellist plays under a full moon and we are carried by the composition, by the musician’s movement and position, through his dream up to the moon itself.

Works of art are able to communicate across a broad spectrum of people. Regardless of the viewers’ age and culture, education and economic situation, a piece of art affects its audience. My hope for this painting, as it communicates with people of all different backgrounds, is that it will open a window for the viewers to drift into their own thoughts.

P.S. A word about an upcoming event: I have a month-long solo show at Augustana College, going up on February 11th. It’s going to be one of my more experimental shows. The project consists of 8 mosaic panels each measuring 23 ft high and 7 ft wide. The images above are a photoshopped view of what the outcome will be when the project is totally finished. This is the vision I had for this project and the design has me very excited.

This kind of art is not just made for business but for awareness and change that will give birth to a new kind of creativity for our city as well as mature the influence of art in society. It has been a very busy and difficult month but the outcome is like a light itself bringing excitement, hope, and anticipation. I feel like this project is a representation of the kind of thing I have always wanted to achieve in my life and one of the most influential imprints I have made in art. It makes me feel like I have given back to the world like it gave to me. Nevertheless, There is more to come!

Click on the images to enlarge!

For more detailed pictures of the design, visit my website.

www.eyobart.comAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16802094201960307756noreply@blogger.com1
